Gold trading hours in IST: when XAUUSDT and spot gold open, close and move most
Spot gold (XAUUSD) trades almost 24 hours a day from Monday morning to Saturday morning in India. Knowing the exact timings in IST, and which hours actually move, saves you from trading a dead market or walking into a news spike.
XAUUSD weekly open and close in IST
International spot gold follows New York time: it opens on Sunday at 18:00 New York time, closes for an hour each day at 17:00–18:00 New York time, and shuts for the weekend on Friday at 17:00 New York time. In India that works out as:
| US summer time (mid-March to early November) | US winter time (early November to mid-March) | |
|---|---|---|
| Week opens | Monday 03:30 IST | Monday 04:30 IST |
| Daily break | 02:30 – 03:30 IST | 03:30 – 04:30 IST |
| Week closes | Saturday 02:30 IST | Saturday 03:30 IST |
India doesn't change its clocks, so every timing shifts by one hour when the US does. In 2026 US clocks go back on 1 November; they go forward again on the second Sunday of March. Brokers can differ by a few minutes, so check your platform's symbol specification.

The three sessions, in IST
| Session | Approx. hours (IST, US/UK summer) | Approx. hours (IST, winter) | What gold usually does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asia (Tokyo, Sydney, Shanghai) | 05:30 – 13:30 | 05:30 – 13:30 | Quieter. Often builds the day's first range. |
| London | 12:30 – 21:00 | 13:30 – 22:00 | Volume arrives; the Asian high or low is frequently taken out. |
| New York | 17:30 – 02:30 | 18:30 – 03:30 | US data and the Fed. The biggest moves of the day. |
| London–New York overlap | 17:30 – 21:00 | 18:30 – 22:00 | Highest liquidity: tight spreads, strong trends, and news spikes. |
The UK and the US change their clocks on different weekends (the UK on the last Sunday of October and March), so for about a week each spring and autumn the London and New York times above are an hour apart from what you expect.
When US data lands in India
Most US economic releases come out at 08:30 New York time: that is 18:00 IST in US summer and 19:00 IST in winter. Federal Reserve rate decisions are announced at 14:00 New York time: 23:30 IST in summer and 00:30 IST in winter, followed by the press conference half an hour later.
- CPI (inflation): usually mid-month, 18:00/19:00 IST.
- Non-Farm Payrolls (jobs): usually the first Friday of the month, 18:00/19:00 IST.
- FOMC decisions: eight times a year, late night IST.

Which hours suit which trader
- After work in India (18:00 onwards) you catch the London–New York overlap and US data: the most opportunity and the most risk. Many Indian traders focus here.
- Morning (06:00–12:00 IST) is the Asian session: smaller ranges, useful for marking levels before London opens.
- Late night trading after 23:00 IST means FOMC nights and fatigue. A daily stop time is part of a good plan.
Gold on crypto exchanges and Indian exchanges
USDT-settled gold perpetuals on crypto exchanges (for example XAUUSDT) can have different trading hours from spot gold, and can behave differently at weekends when the underlying market is shut. Gold futures on Indian exchanges follow their own exchange timings. Always check the hours of the exact product you trade. See XAUUSD vs XAUUSDT for the differences.
Frequently asked questions
What time does the gold market open in India?
International spot gold (XAUUSD) opens on Monday at 03:30 IST during US daylight saving time and at 04:30 IST during US winter time, and trades almost continuously until Saturday morning.
Is XAUUSD open on Saturday and Sunday?
No. Spot gold closes on Friday at 17:00 New York time (Saturday 02:30 or 03:30 IST) and reopens on Sunday evening New York time, which is Monday early morning in India.
What is the best time to trade gold in India?
Liquidity and movement peak during the London–New York overlap, roughly 17:30–21:00 IST in summer and 18:30–22:00 IST in winter. It is also when US data is released, so spreads can widen around news.
Why did gold timings change by one hour?
Gold follows New York time and the US uses daylight saving time while India does not, so the IST timings shift by an hour in March and November.
