How Bitcoin and gold move: sessions, liquidity and key levels
Price moves when orders meet. This lesson from the Ten12 Mentors Academy explains sessions, liquidity and why the same chart behaves differently at different times of day.
Price moves when orders meet. The more orders there are, the more easily price travels, so the time of day matters as much as the chart pattern.
The three sessions
| Session | Approx. hours (IST) | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Asia (Tokyo, Sydney) | 05:30 – 13:30 | Quieter for gold and the majors; ranges often form here. |
| London | 12:30 – 21:30 | Volume arrives. Asian highs and lows are often taken out early. |
| New York | 17:30 – 02:30 | US data (CPI, jobs, Fed) lands here; the London–New York overlap is the most active window. |
Hours shift by an hour when Europe and the US change their clocks (March and October/November). Bitcoin trades 24/7 but still follows the same rhythm: weekends are thinner and spikier.
Each market has its own character
- Gold (XAUUSD) reacts strongly to the US dollar and US interest-rate expectations. Moves of $20–$60 in a day are normal; news days can be far larger.
- Bitcoin (BTCUSD / BTCUSDT) is the most volatile: a 3–5% day is ordinary. Liquidity is deep but gaps in sentiment are fast.
Liquidity sits at obvious levels
Yesterday's high and low, last week's high and low, the Asian range, round numbers: many traders place stops just beyond them. When price reaches those levels it either breaks through (stops become fuel) or sweeps and reverses (stops are taken and price snaps back). Most of the strategies on this platform are built around those two behaviours.
Quick check
When is gold usually most active for a trader in India?
Answer: The London–New York overlap, roughly 17:30 – 21:30 IST. The overlap of the two biggest sessions brings the most orders and most US data.
Why does price often react at yesterday's high?
Answer: Many stop and entry orders rest just beyond it. Obvious levels collect orders, which either fuel a breakout or get swept.
Frequently asked questions
Which session is best for trading gold?
The London–New York overlap, roughly 17:30–21:00 IST in summer, usually has the most liquidity and movement.
Why does price react at previous highs and lows?
Many traders place stop and entry orders just beyond obvious levels, so price either breaks through on those orders or sweeps them and reverses.
